Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem

Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem by Ramon Casas. What a charming painting. Ramon Casas painted Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem for Els Quatre Gats, a popular beer hall in Barcelona frequented by artists such as Casa himself, Picasso, and Gaudi. There used to be an inscription in the top right that translated to ‘In order to ride a bike you can’t go with a straight back’ which apparently meant in order to progress you had to buck tradition. It was a fit saying for the place, its reputation, and it’s patrons. According to Wikipedia Els Quatre Gats, translating to ‘The four Cats’, is itself a saying that means, ‘just a few people’. The original of Els Quatre Gats closed many years ago but a historical duplicate has been opened that you can visit and enjoy.
