Rock formations in Meteora, Greece. Meteora, Greece is most famous for its stunning monasteries perched high on precarious rock formations. However, if you’re not confined by cheesy, timed bus tours, the area is also great for hiking. I walked from Kalabaka both days and on one afternoon strolled off to the far side of the mountain around the time the monasteries were closing. After a small wander on wooded trails I found some wonderful views, such as the one above. I can’t tell you much about the rock formations as I don’t know too much about them or geology. The Wikipedia article below makes it clear to me that they are not formed from volcanos, which would have been my guess. For more information, read below!
