Rouen Cathedral- Setting Sun, (Symphony in Grey and Pink), 1894, by Claude Monet. One of the gorgeous views of Rouen Cathedral painted by Monet. He created many these paintings of the cathedral. Most of them are from almost the same view and nearly all of them are quite beautiful. Like his waterlilies, they show the effects that light and atmosphere have on objects, as well as on our own subjective perception of objects. Many European academic paintings before the impressionists were deliberate attempts to create technically accurate images. By the time of the impressionists much had changed. Their experiments with colour and light in painting opened a beautiful new avenue for representing things on a flat surface. The images produced by Monet are sketchy, somewhat obscure, and not technically accurate. However, because of this and not despite this, they give the viewer a subjective impression of the building viewed at various times of day.
